A revolution in English learning - 英語聽說自學新平台

Recently we were introduced to a new English learning platform - English Central. We all fell in love with it at first sight. The platform offers a variety of courses aimed at building learners' listening, vocabulary and speaking power using video clips from VOA, National Geographic and other reliable sources. The design is simple: learners view a video, listen and learn 5 words by completing 5 blanks in the transcript, and imitate lines spoken in the clip. The scores in vocabulary writing and recorded speech will be shown providing immediate feedback. The design is supported by second language learning theories. 平等教育機會的夢 From TeleNex to Edmodo

下午和一位老同學一齊草擬了一份優質教育基金建議書，申請撥款添購移動學習的器材。什麼促使我們又走在一起呢？是一個夢想，一個一同為天水圍孩子到平等教育機會的夢想。

1994 至 96 年間借調至課程發展處剛成立不久的發展組，和另外5位來自不同學校、不同學科的老師組成全港第一支校本課程發展支援隊伍，俗稱「空降部隊」。英文科得香港大學教育學院徐碧美教授的專業支援，參與 TeleNex 的網絡教材分享和老師之間的交流。  

1996 到天水圍創校，校長、校董和老師懷著夢想，要引入先進的課程、敎學策略和教育科技，幫助天水圍區的學生得到優秀的教育。當義務副校長派給每四人一組同事一部手提電腦，指導我們用email 溝通，我就心𥚃疑惑，為什麼同事近在呎, 言傳不就可以了嗎？為啥要「寫」電郵，一年之後，我就戀上了互聯網，這系統比TeleNex 先進多了。

2008年11月隨教會到粵北連南短宣。我們教小學生涮牙，中學生英語。在農民家中燒午飯，廚房裡漆黑一片，那只估計有一千歲的鑊坐在幾棵三尖八角的石頭上，六個人弄了半天終於造了三度菜，煮了一煲飯。我當時想：只要有互聯網到學校，有電腦，就可以把優秀的課堂教學引進這些山區學校，年青一代有知識就能擺脫貧窮，甩掉落後。

2010-12年我和同事先後參加了Apple在星加坡和香港的國際會議，參觀了星加坡一間國際學校和國立資優生學校，在香港的不同國際學校覌了幾次一人一機的課堂，看到建構主義的教學設計，運用web2.0, 使課程四個common places: 學生、教材、教師和學習環境之間的互動發揮到淋漓盡緻。

最近重返天水圍，彷彿時光倒流了10年，學生的英文學習仍是那麼困難，最基本的拼讀能力上到中學還未掌握，詞彙量不足以應付高考英文試卷的要求。教育科技的進步，在這匱乏的區域並不太感受到，digital divide 「數碼分隔」使貧富更加懸殊。

和老同學探索Edmodo, 一個跨國界跨學校的教師專業交流，可以跨地域開設網上課室的平台，1996年創校的夢, 客覌條件已具備了，只要有充足的資金, 改善裝備，増強培訓， 藴蔵在老師校長心疷裡對學生的愛，會激發成變革的行動，平等教育，則不遠矣。

在生命河圖書館內，雖然只有三部iPAD, 其中兩部還是IPAD1，知識、智慧、上帝賜給香港的地質公園的美滋潤著孩子的生命.....學習不再孤單，不再無助, 神的愛在湧流.....

Developing reading and speaking skills with IPADs as an ‘assistant’

Yesterday a group of five students used IPADs to practice for the upcoming oral exam- group discussion. The task was to plan an outing to one of the geological parks. The IPads were used for retrieving the contents from the websites on geological parks and geowalks, as well as getting the pronunciation of the words using the text to speech function. 

Since the IPADs were the oldest model - IPAD1, which didn't have a camera, and thus videos, one of the most powerful function of such mobile learning devices, could not be taken of their discussion process. 

It was a small but tremendous step forward for this group of students. Using the bilingual texts in the government government website, their understanding of the English text was much enhanced even without an English teacher around. This is extremely important to ‘confidence’ building for disadvantaged students whose families can provide hardly any support in their English learning.

The ‘Voice of America Learning English’  is one of the websites I frequently use for preparing my students self access learning. Recently it has revamped its contents and organization, differentiating the passages into level 1 and level 2 English. Most pleasing of all, to teachers and parents, is the new feature of post- reading exercises: vocabulary, comprehension and listening! This really makes teachers’ and parents’ life much easier.

我經常推薦這網頁給英中的初中同學，或努力升lev, 希望由level1 升到level3 或4的同學。我喜歡的內容是科技，和美國歷史及文化。比正常英文口語慢三分一的朗讀速度，非常合適第二語言的中等程度學習者。最近更新了內容和版面，添加了讀後練習，同學可以鞏固詞彙、理解和聆聽能力。實實在在地減輕老師和家長備課的負擔。

為了幫助新移民同學有效地認識香港社會和香港政府，及善用他們的中文知識和能力去增強英語閱讀理解能力，嘗試運用政府部門的中、英文網頁的各種文體，作為朗讀及閱讀理解的學習材料。YouTube 也有不少政府部門上載備有字幕的英文影片。例如警務處關於單車安全的資訉，配合運輸處的單車安全影片，使教和學都容易了。這個方法對一些英語能力稍遜的同學確有幫助，既學到「通識」，又學習到很多和香港社會以及日常生活息息相關的詞彙。
