Yu Tim at HKU Service 100

31 October 2014

We had a fruitful day at the Service 100 Fiesta, with 11 students signed up showing interest for the project. It was the first time Principal Li and Liang Lu came to HKU, and they were very impressed by the international composition of students here. In fact, we made an international team as well: David from America, Principal Li Korea, Liang China, and me Hong Kong. Our next-door neighbour - Food Label team came to chat with us and were amazed at hearing Korean conversation between an American guy and a Chinese lady.

Neighbor to our left, 'Ignite Our Dream', was initiated by the red-shirt guy who came to our booth to make friends with me. He really impressed me by his humble and excellent communication. He told me that he and two other team-mates started the project of recruiting HKU students to do volunteer teaching in China in 2013 and now they have already recruited more than 70 volunteers and will set off to 4 different sites in China. They work through the Tin Ka Ping Foundation Fund. This is no coincidence that we met. I shared with him what we have been doing in promoting cooperative learning in Yu Tim, also professionally supported by the Tin Ka Ping CL Train the Trainer project.

Our biggest reward perhaps was that we got these resource persons and NGOs that can be our future partners:

Yu Tim - English Singing Contest

29 October 2014

It was a big day to Grade 3 students. Ji's class was so dressed up for this event. Many put on pretty pink dresses and had their long hair nicely pleated. More than 70 parents came. It was a working day. But they came. Just to see their kids perform, and to meet their class teachers. For their children they were willing to take a day off. After the 9 solos, we had the most exciting part: interclass competition.   All of them did the 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' with energy and unity. Well done. All the anxieties were gone, but a sense of achievement, the English team had made a big step forward.

Yu Tim - Thankfulness training

17 October 2014
 A sunny but cool morning.
Mr. Li Jie and his team conducted a thankfulness training for students, parents and teachers. Grade 1 & 2 students sat on little old chairs while their seniors sat on floor. Parents and their babies stayed at the back.Li started with a story about hardship of a peasant worker. The whole school was moved to tears when he came to the point of children being ungrateful to their parents who sweated and toiled for their food, and clothes. Then came the part when teachers burst into tears and students and parents went to thank teachers. Never had I seen scenarios where children and adults were so emotionally aroused. It did have a healing effect to some teachers and parents.

Yu Tim- workshop on class management 班级经营培训

8 October 2014

A group of 11 young teachers from Heilongjiang to Sichuan, with less than 2 years' teaching experience attended the workshop on the last day of the 65th National Day holiday. We played two ice breaking games and did a sharing of thankful experiences. We practiced oral reporting, as well as writing appreciation cards. Most of the sharing were about how friends came to help when they had problems such as illness in this foreign land. Love and care, here they have found, in Yu Tim.

Then I shared some useful materials I found from internet and books. One that caught their hearts was the blog by a veteran teacher in Taiwan. They all want to visit this website as soon as they can .

Yu Tim - New desks and chairs finally

23 September 2014

I just couldn't believe it, but it really happened. Two trucks carrying 900 sky blue desks and chairs arrived at dawn, 5.00 a.m. More than 40 staff were waiting at school gate. Within 2 hours, all were   unloaded. At 9.00 different-sized chairs and desks nicely settled down in different home rooms. All grade 4-6 students participated in this mass movement of their new furniture. Teachers helped out round the corners and at staircases.
This is China.
